Whitney Walden Announced as Cascade School of Music’s
Fortissimo Award Winner for May, 2018
Cascade School of Music is proud to announce 15 year old drum and bass student, Whitney Walden, has been awarded the Fortissimo Award for February. Whitney is a drum student of Meshem Jackson, a bass student of John Allen, and the daughter of Debbie Walden of Bend.
The Fortissimo Award recognizes students in year three and above of private instruction who exhibit talent, effort and achievement. These are Cascade School of Music’s best students. The students who receive this award have been nominated by their teachers as showing both great promise as musicians along with great perseverance and commitment to their craft.
Whitney is enrolled in private lessons, as well as Cascade Jazz and Academy Blue, the percussion ensemble at the Cascade School of Music.
Debbie Walden states, “Whitney has been playing drums for 2 years. She started taking lessons with Meshem after watching our local high schools march in the downtown parades and aspiring to be among them one day. Last summer, she attended the University of Oregon summer music camp and learned leadership and field program skills that she has had the opportunity to use in Academy Blue. Whitney is a sophomore at Summit HS, and has played bass in the orchestra for 2 years. This year, she joined Summit Winds and plays percussion. She marched in the Veteran’s Day parade this last year with her high school band as well as with Academy Blue in the Christmas Parade. At the Cascade School of Music, she plays electric bass in Cascade Jazz, drums with Academy Blue, and takes private lessons on her upright bass. In her spare time she enjoys composing on the piano and jamming on the drums. She is also a member of the Summit Girls Varsity Tennis team.”
Meshem Jackson states, “Whitney is a remarkably bright multi-instrumentalist. She plays electric bass in the CSM jazz band, play upright bass in Summit High School Winds, has performed marimba in our percussion ensemble, and is learning drum set through private study. Whitney is drumline captain for Academy Blue with which she leads and performs snare drum.”
Along with an award certificate, Whitney received a $100 scholarship toward her private lessons, and a gift from award sponsor Cuppa Yo and Cascade Indoor Sports. Whitney and subsequent monthly Fortissimo Award winners will compete head to head for a $1000 scholarship to continue their music studies at Cascade School of Music during Crescendo Bendo to be held at the Tower Theatre on June 2, 2018.
